The season
Just east of Seattle in Carnation, WA, the Fall Harvest Pumpkin Festival opens Saturday, September 26. From October on we add Fridays — three full days a week of harvest, right through Sunday, November 1 — with 70+ attractions and activities, the 425 Magazine Corn Maze, Pumpkin Village, seasonal treats and a pumpkin field the size of a small town. The Festival is closed Monday through Thursday.
Every Festival day runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Last admission is at 5 p.m., and rides and attractions close at 6 p.m.

Load, aim, fire an apple across the field at a very distant target. Forty apples to a bucket, and the far targets are further than they look.

Cider soft-serve blended cold, poured into a caramel-lined jar, then crowned with an entire cinnamon-sugar caramel apple. Two straws, because you will need help.
New this year
Towering pumpkin stacks, hay-bale streets and a photo corner built for the one shot that ends up on the fridge all year. Both are open every Festival day. Beside them lies the biggest pumpkin patch in Washington state — free to walk into, keeping its own hours, and priced by the size of the pumpkin you carry out.

There are dozens of ways to spend a day at the festival — and yes, we’ve even crafted your perfect plan. One highly scientific itinerary, developed through years of research involving roller coasters, farm animals, cinnamon sugar, airborne apples, molten glass, pumpkin bread, and the firm belief that calories consumed while surrounded by pumpkins are legally classified as “seasonal experiences.”
Use it as inspiration. Ignore it completely. Get distracted by a goat for 25 minutes. Stop every eleven feet because somebody found another Instagram-ready fall photo spot. Lose all sense of direction in the corn maze. Buy another donut. That’s fall at the farm.
10:00 AM
You’re in.
While everyone else is still standing just inside the entrance discussing what to do first, make your move.
Roller coaster.
Spinning barrels.
Merry-go-round.
Maybe a quick cruise in the antique cars.
Some members of your party will immediately attempt to ride everything before 10:17.
These people are called children.
And then there is…
The smell.
Somewhere nearby, fresh pumpkin pie spice donuts are being made.
You can try to ignore it.
You may even boldly announce:
“We’ll get donuts later.”
Adorable.
This becomes considerably harder when you walk past the donut shop and can actually watch fresh batches being made through the window.
Stay strong.
You’ve been here seventeen minutes.
10:15 AM
You will quickly notice something.
There are pumpkins everywhere.
Fall displays everywhere.
Hay bales.
Autumn colors.
Ridiculously photogenic little corners that appear to have been placed specifically so someone in your family can shout:
“WAIT. THIS WOULD BE SUCH A CUTE PICTURE.”
Go with it.
These are the photos that will end up on Instagram, on Grandma’s refrigerator, in the family Christmas card and mysteriously resurfacing every October for the next decade.
Take the picture.
Then take twelve more because somebody blinked.
10:30 AM
The first train of the day pulls out of the station at 10:30.
Climb aboard and conduct some serious tactical reconnaissance.
Pumpkins over there.
Animals that way.
Ferris wheel in the distance.
Roller coaster located.
Apple cannons spotted.
Donut aroma still tracking your position.
You now have a battle plan.
The children have discarded it.
11:00 AM
Pony rides begin at 11:00, making this an excellent time for younger visitors to meet their noble autumn steed.
Then wander through the animal areas and say hello to the farm residents.
There will almost certainly be one goat who looks suspiciously confident about his ability to steal your lunch.
Do not negotiate with him.
He has done this before.
This is also a perfect opportunity for that wholesome family farm photograph everybody imagined before leaving home.
Everyone smiling.
Nobody blinking.
No rabbit ears behind Grandpa.
No child suddenly deciding they don’t “do pictures anymore.”
Statistically unlikely.
Still worth attempting.
11:30 AM
You tried.
Nobody can say you didn’t try.
You’ve now smelled the pumpkin pie spice donuts for an hour and a half.
You’ve watched them being made fresh through the donut shop window.
You’ve probably walked past them twice.
At this point, resistance is becoming theatrical.
Follow your nose.
Acquire an irresponsible number of warm donuts.
Then announce that you’re “just getting some for everyone.”
Everyone knows what happened.
If you’re taking the obligatory donut photo, do it quickly.
Warm donuts have an extremely short modeling career.

Yes.
Pumpkin bread.
The quiet superstar of fall.
Moist, pumpkiny, wildly popular and considerably easier to eat while walking than a caramel apple.
You do not necessarily need pumpkin bread immediately after the donuts.
We’re simply informing you that it exists.
What happens next is between you and autumn.
Noon
Breakfast dessert accomplished.
Time to become athletic.
Sort of.
Head back to the attractions.
Dig for treasure at gem mining.
Scale the rock climbing wall.
Take on the zipline.
Cruise around in the antique cars, which travel at a fixed speed and provide a pleasant little drive through the farm.
Then find the pedal cars.
Those are where the racing happens.
Parents who five minutes ago said:
“It’s not a race.”
will suddenly begin discussing inside lines and overtaking strategy.
And then…
APPLE CANNONS.
They’re back.
Load an apple.
Take aim.
Fire at the targets.
Discover which otherwise mild-mannered member of your family has apparently spent years preparing for competitive fruit artillery.
Nothing says traditional family fall outing quite like sending an apple downrange at considerable enthusiasm.
Aim at the targets.
Not your brother.
We feel this distinction should be made.
12:30 PM
Time for something completely different.
Stroll through the new Robert Bank Glass Studio and watch artists transform glowing molten glass into finished creations right in front of you.
It’s hot.
It’s mesmerizing.
And it’s a wonderful opportunity for the kids to discover that somewhere on the farm, adults are allowed to play with fire professionally.
Watch the glass being formed.
See the colors and shapes emerge.
And if your timing happens to line up, you might even catch a tiny glass pumpkin taking shape from the molten glass.
Then browse the finished creations and perhaps take home something special, including a tiny glass pumpkin.
Because apparently the correct number of pumpkins to bring home from a pumpkin festival is:

You’ve walked.
You’ve climbed.
You’ve raced.
You’ve launched produce.
You’ve stood near molten glass.

Find some hot, fresh corn on the cob.
Apply butter according to your personal engineering specifications.
Then accept the fundamental truth that nobody has ever eaten corn on the cob elegantly.
It cannot be done.
This is also a fine opportunity for the grown-ups to investigate Remlinger Brewery while everybody refuels.

After lunch, perhaps restore civilization with a ride on the Ferris wheel.
Take in the Snoqualmie Valley.
Admire the fall colors.
Spot the attractions you haven’t conquered yet.
Try to locate your car.
Realize every vehicle looks exactly the same from up there.
And enjoy approximately four glorious minutes during which parents remember what sitting feels like.
Bonus points for a family selfie at the top.
Extra bonus points for retaining possession of your phone.

Now we’re going full fall.
Hop aboard the hay ride.
The hay ride is included for Fall Harvest Pumpkin Festival guests and conveniently carries you right over toward Pumpkin Village and the corn maze.
This is considerably easier than announcing:
“Okay, everybody follow me.”
…and immediately losing half the family.
Relax.
Ride.
Take pictures.
You’ve officially entered the pumpkin portion of the program.

Fall colors.
Autumn displays.
Kids with pumpkins.
Grandparents with pumpkins.
Couples with pumpkins.
Pictures of children who were smiling beautifully until the precise instant the camera opened.
This is where your phone storage begins quietly reconsidering its career choices.

Now comes one of the day’s most useful tricks.

Apparently.

If anyone in your group has spent the day saying:
“But I wanted to ride a pony…”
Stop what you’re doing.
This is the deadline.
3:30 PM is the final check-in time at the registers for pony rides.
After 3:30, no additional pony ride check-ins are accepted.
Check in at the registers by 3:30, then head over to the pony barn for those final rides.
At 4:00, the ponies are finished for the day and head back to the barn.
Frankly, they’ve earned it.
They’ve been carrying tiny cowboys since lunch.
3:45 PM
You have reached that delicate stage of the afternoon when everybody insists:
“I’m not tired.”
while leaning against stationary objects.
The treatment is obvious.
Caramel apple.
Sweet.
Sticky.
Crunchy.
Virtually impossible to eat gracefully.
In other words, perfect.
Then wander into the arcade and determine whether anyone in your family possesses previously undisclosed skee-ball talent.

Someone suddenly remembers an attraction they’ve been talking about since breakfast.

The farm is glowing.
This is the photographic sweet spot.
Ride the Ferris wheel.
Take another spin on the merry-go-round.
Cruise the antique cars.
Find one more Instagram-ready autumn backdrop.
Gather everybody together.
Attempt the definitive family picture.
Take seventeen versions.
One will be perfect.
Three will contain closed eyes.
Two will feature somebody looking at another camera.
One child will suddenly decide smiling is no longer compatible with their personal brand.

One last whirl in the spinning barrels.

Maybe another carousel ride because some traditions require no explanation.
And if somebody discovers one surviving donut?

Collect the jackets.
Locate the water bottle.
Retrieve whatever somebody left near the arcade.
Make sure somebody still has the Corn Maze Scavenger Hunt card.
Check for glass pumpkins.
Count the children.
Count them again.
Confirm nobody has returned to the apple cannons for “just one last shot.”
Begin strolling toward the exit while everybody debates the day’s most important question:
“What was your favorite part?”
Expect answers involving:
The roller coaster.
The pony.

Possibly before you’ve even left the parking lot.

Get yourselves in the front of the shot and the completely unconscious children in the backseat.
Because without photographic evidence, none of the grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins or family friends will ever believe your children voluntarily sat still, remained silent and fell asleep simultaneously.

Forty minutes from Seattle down the Snoqualmie Valley. Parking is free and on-site; arrive before 11 on Saturdays for the short walk.

Yes — the rides are covered by one admission, as many times as you like, along with the rest of the farm’s seventy-plus attractions and activities. Pony rides, the Zipline Adventure, gem mining and the apple cannons are the exceptions: ponies are added to your ticket online, and the other three are bought at a Market register.

Opening weekend is Saturday, September 26. From October we run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., through Sunday, November 1. The Festival is closed Monday through Thursday.
No. When Pumpkin U-Pick is open the field is free to walk into and parking is free — you pay only for the pumpkins you pick, priced by size rather than weight, and there are wheelbarrows waiting at the rows. Festival admission is a separate thing entirely. The field keeps its own hours, so check current Pumpkin U-Pick hours before you drive out.
Boots. The fields are working farmland and October in the valley is honest about it. Layers, and socks for the hay jump.
Absolutely, though the corn maze and the far pumpkin rows are rough going. There is stroller parking at most ride entrances.
Saturdays in mid-October do sell out. Buying online locks your date and saves a dollar a ticket.
